Australia has its seasons in reverse to the majority of the world. When it is winter in Europe and America, it is summer in Australia, and vice versa. While it may be difficult to imagine Australians sunbathing on the beach and swimming and surfing in the ocean in December, that is generally how they spend their Christmas holiday.

Australia is a huge country, around the size of the contiguous United States, and it has several distinct climactic zones. The different climates create different types of landscapes: desert, mountain, rain forest and sunny beaches. Also, to the surprise of some, it does snow in Australia, there are winter snowfields in several states; and one of the most popular skiing areas is the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. Australian's ski season runs from June to September.

Although Australia does receive some snowfall, it is one of the driest places in the world, second only to Antarctica. One of the biggest attractions in Northern Australia is the huge Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage Sight covering over 4 million acres. The dry season, which occurs May through October, is definitely the best time to go, although you should try to book your tours and accommodation about a year in advance, if possible. However, Kakadu is also a wonderful experience in the wet season, which is generally November through April. Crowds are fewer and the rains can cause waterfalls to swell and create spectacular lightning storms.

No visit to Australia is complete without seeing one of the wonders of nature, the Great Barrier Reef. It is impressive any time of the year, but July through November is considered to be the best time; there is less chance of rain and the temperatures are a little bit cooler. The waters around the Barrier Reef are some of the clearest and cleanest in the world. If you are diving to see the reef, as thousands of vacationers do, August through January is peak visibility time.

Also, if you are visiting the northern coast of Australia, especially the northern Queensland area, you should be prepared for possible cyclones. These strong winds are caused by warm sea temperatures and generally occur from November to April. If a cyclone is likely, the local TV stations will broadcast a warning. It is strongly suggested that you should take shelter immediately or evacuate the area in the case of a cyclone.

Australia is absolutely a land of extremes, and that includes the climate. However, regardless of the weather, a trip to the Land Down Under is an unforgettable experience.

Thinking Of A French Gite Holiday In France

Although a Gite used to be a basic place to stay, but today you can get luxurious accommodation like swimming pools etc, that can offer excellent value for money when it comes to your family holiday, plus with thousands available all around France, many people find that staying in Gites is a good way of experiencing France whether it be whilst travelling through or for a memorable holiday in a specific region.

Technically speaking to be called a gite the owner must live close by in order to provide help, assistance and a warm welcome to guests, whereas if it is known as a French holiday cottage, then this normally means that it is owned by someone who does not live in France, like British, German or even American owned.

Gites are generally old farm workers cottages or converted outbuildings and barns within the proximity of the owners' principal residence, and this type of holiday accommodation is sometimes regarded as 'basic' in terms of facilities and the first ones we ever came across were extremely basic. In fact, in this tiny little village that only had a church, one shop, a restaurant and a bar all these so called gites were like wooden huts, just with beds, toilet and a wash basin, that were situated in the back garden area behind the local bar and restaurant!

However most gites these days are generally very well kept and a growing number of them will have excellent facilities such as fully fitted kitchens, en-suite bathrooms, TV, DVD and even access to a swimming pool and many other sporting activities that the whole family can enjoy, just what is needed when on holiday with the family.

Also, holiday gites in France are encouraged by the local tourist board and planning authorities as they attract investment and tourism into the area, and all owners are required to ensure that they are safe and comply with the necessary rules, regulations and insurance requirements, in turn giving the holiday maker peace of mind.

It is the Gites de France that assesses them, which means the quality has risen and they are far better equipped and comfortable compared to how they used to be, plus with the foreign investors who have purchased property in France for renovation, the standard has risen even higher and you will not come across many gites that are any where near as basic as what we mentioned earlier, to be honest, we have not come across one since that doesn't at least have a kitchen, seating area and proper bathroom facilities so you will not need to panic too much when booking!

You can also find a number of classes of gites, which are graded by G?s de France and to give you a help in hand, some of these are as follows:

Known as Gite Rural, these offer self-catering accommodation and can be located in the countryside, by the sea, or in the mountains, they are completely self contained with one or more bedrooms, a lounge, sometimes a dining room, a kitchen and bathroom facilities and it is these particular types of gite that have come up in standard considerably over the years.

Then you have Gites d'Enfants, which are specifically for children and it is during the school holidays that host families will provide lodgings for children of various ages with a wide variety of activities. The big plus is that these Children's gites are very well regulated and inspected to ensure a safe and secure environment for each child.

The stopover and holiday getaways, known as Gites d'Etape, are normally situated well off the beaten track and are mainly for groups of walkers or cyclists, and the best comparison to this type of gite is most probably a youth hostel and these are basic.

So as you can probably realise by now, holiday gites can range from the very simple converted barns to part of a large chateau in private grounds and are located all over France, right through from rural villages, to the centre of towns, up in the mountains or right near to the beaches, the choice of accommodation is endless.

Eure (department number 27) is located in the region of Haute-Normandie and has an estimated population of 541,054.

Evreux

Evreux is the capital town of the department and is an important commercial and market center. It is one of the oldest towns in France, with many splendid sites. Evreux has a bishop and boasts a cathedral which is one of the largest and finest in France.

On the Iton river just west of the Eure, it is surrounded by postwar architecture, but offers three fabulous attractions: an excellent museum with exceptional Gallo-roman finds; a Cathedral of Notre-Dame (11th-18th C.), which managed to miss the war bombs and today still displays its flamboyant Gothic features and stained glass; and the Abbey of St Taurin (11th-15th C.) that contains the thirteenth century shrine of Saint Taurin, a masterpiece of French goldsmith's work.

Evreux has had its fair share of historical bad luck. The town was flattened by the Vandals in the 5th century; it was pillaged by Normans in 892; taken and burned by Henry I of England in 1119 and in 1194 it was captured by Philip Augustus of France. During the 15th century, control of the town alternated between the English and French.

Evreux was badly damaged during the air raids of 1940 (when the town burned for an entire week) and also in 1944.

Another interesting fact, Jimi Hendrix kicked off his first tour with the Experience in the town of Evreux, 13 October 1966 - an event commemorated by a plaque in the town!

Bernay

Bernay, once a religious centre is today a busy market town. It is located south of Pont Audemer. The town is a major farming centre with surrounding fields full of cows. There is a small museum in the centre with a collection of paintings, furniture and ceramics.

Le Bec-Hellouin

Le Bec-Hellouin is a typical Norman style village with half timbered houses set among the orchards. Probably its most major attraction is its abbey, which was founded in 1034. The abbey was once one of the most important religious sites in northern Europe.

Nonancourt

Nonancourt's origins go back to the Roman invasion, but the town really came into its own when Henry I of England established a fortress here in the 12th century as a defence against the French to the south. Although the fortress no longer exists, the little town still offers plenty of architecture from the late middle ages as well as very pretty walks along by the river Avre.

Giverny

The garden is open from the spring to the mid-autumn and queues can get very long, but many agree it is worth the wait. Conches-en-ouche The picturesque town of Conches-en-ouche is located near the River Rouloir. There are plenty of sites to see including many beautiful medieval houses, the church of Ste-Foy whose windows are made of superb Renaissance stained glass and a ruined twelfth-century castle. In addition to everything ancient, Conches also boasts many modern sculptures that are placed around the town. The surrounding countryside is made up of lush pastures, orchards, rivers and forests, which are perfect for afternoon strolls and picnics.

Les Andelys

The hill-top Ch?au Gaillard at Les Andelys conjures up images of days of old, where Richard the Lion heart held court (his heart is entombed in Rouen cathedral). The Ch?au dominates any approach by land or along the Seine and is said to have been captured by brave souls coming through the sewers. It is advisable to double check opening hours with the local tourist office before making the climb.

How to get there

That said, Gomera is warm all year round - usually sunny, with temperatures ranging from a winter low of around 20-degrees, to a summer high of 28-degrees+. And it offers myriad attractions - appealing principally to holidaymakers who seek a conducive year-round climate, yet eschew the tourist crowds.

Getting there
There are no direct flights to Gomera: the European Union-funded airstrip is suitable only for the short island hops - to Tenerife North and Gran Canaria - that depart twice-daily. You are therefore left with two choices: to fly into Tenerife North, in hopes of catching a connecting flight. Or to take to the sea.

The Garajonay Express high-speed catamaran from Los Cristianos (a 20-minute, EUR 20 taxi ride from the airport) reaches Santiago - the island's southernmost town, and my chosen destination - in a little over an hour. Unfortunately, however, the service is somewhat unreliable: a light breeze is all that's required to restrict the vessel to port.

On arrival in San Sebastian, you have two choices: bus or taxi. The former are regular and reliable; the latter: ubiquitous and underemployed. Santiago is roughly 30kms west of San Sebastian. A taxi is therefore likely to cost around EUR 75,-. However, the majority of luggage-laden tourists prefer to book their travel arrangements in advance - ensuring seamless taxi, boat and coach connections from the airport to El Balc?br>
First impressions
The 40-minute drive to Santiago is a revelation: your introduction to Gomera - carrying you heavenward along giddying mountain roads. Then plunging back down through sweeping terraced valleys scattered with cacti, prickly pear and eucalyptus. The experience triggers a kind of sensory overload - of almost unbearably vivid colours, and unfamiliar scents. To one side you encounter towering basalt cliffs. To the other: deep, dark laurisilva forests; almond and orange groves; banana plantations - a wealth and diversity of florae and vegetation that simply cannot exist elsewhere.

Then before you know it... you are sweeping down into the refreshingly undisturbed village that is to be your temporary home.

Around and about
For walkers, Santiago represents an ideal base: numerous footpaths criss-cross the island. They are - almost without exception - brilliantly signposted, with routes to suit all levels of fitness and ability.

And a number of accompanied walking tours - such as the Rain Forest Walk, which takes place each Sunday - are available, offering coach-collection from the Santiago. Just one note of caution, however, before you set off...

Take along good walking boots, water, a camera, with plenty of spare memory or film - for the infinite number of inspiring views that you'll want to capture - and a waterproof jacket. Yes, a jacket. As you bask in the Canarian sun, contemplating your first peripatetic adventure, you'll most likely mock the very suggestion. Don't. The temperature can drop, dramatically, following even a short drive into the mountains. And rain is not unusual. You have been warned.

Less athletic visitors will be pleased to learn that cars are available for hire, and fuel is cheap (EUR 10,- will comfortably cover your diesel costs for a full circuit of the island). The roads, though narrow and winding, are quiet and recently tarmacced, making this a great way to explore Gomera's hidden nooks and crannies. (Just remember to sound your horn, as you navigate those all-too-common blind corners.)

You might also consider joining the full-day island excursion. This informative coach trip, which takes in a stay at the Garajonay National Park Visitor Centre, as well as lunch at the Castillo del Mar (a restored 19th century banana trading station, that stretches out into the Atlantic), will doubtless reveal numerous sites of interest to which you'll wish to return.

Essential Gomera
Whatever your preferred mode of transportation, a visit to the 'Parc Nacional de Garajonay' is essential. There, the near-constant temperature and humidity has created an almost eerily tranquil 3,984-hectare environment made up of laurels and lichen, mosses and ferns, freshwater springs, streams and spectacular rock formations.

Protected since 1982, and achieving UNESCO recognition in 1984, Garajonay is home to one of the world's largest continuous areas of laurisilva forest - a habitat that has almost disappeared from southern Europe and North Africa.

Weather permitting, a boat trip to San Sebastian is likewise recommended (though it's best avoided, when the sea is rough). The port-town and capital was visited by Christopher Columbus, in 1492, before he set out on the voyage for which he is best known. (Indeed, a notice at the local well records how the explorer drew its water to 'baptise America'.)

Like all the neighbouring towns, San Sebastian is quiet, friendly, and very well-kept: you'll see no graffiti on the walls, few cigarette butts on the pavement. With a population of 2,000 or so, it is the largest municipality. The mountain and the hills dominate the west; the port lies in the east. And within that port, the beach, which - though rocky - is both clean and safe.

The town's handful of shops, restaurants and bars are all within easy walking distance, making it an ideal destination for a light lunch, a revivifying glass of wine, and a spot of people-watching in the central square.

Similarly accessible via the regular ferry from Santiago, Valle Gran Rey to the west offers - on clear days - a panoramic view of La Palma and El Hierro. In addition to a popular beach, the region provides many reminders of Gomera's fascinating past, not least the hermitages of San Nicol?de Tolentino and La Adoraci?e los Reyes which - though recently renovated - date back to the early 16th century.

Historically speaking
The earliest known inhabitants of the Canaries were the Guanches, a Berber people of particular anthropological interest, who were assimilated by the conquering Castilians in the 15th century. Of the Guanches, little trace remains - which is hardly surprising, as they were illiterate. That said, they did leave a rather unusual legacy on Gomera: El Silbo, the peculiar whistling language used by the farmers to communicate from mountain to mountain. (Alas, El Silbo is slowly dying out, in line with the decline in farming - not to mention the relatively recent arrival of electricity and the telephone.)

By 1495, the archipelago was entirely Spanish. And thus it remains, despite the Canaries' proximity to Africa - and the islanders' tongue-in-cheek protestations to the contrary. We are, they protest, Gomerans first - Canarians second. Only given these preconditions, or the onset of a high-profile international football match, do they acknowledge their Spanish ancestry and influence.

Quite unlike the more devout Spain, where Easter is all-important, Carnival is the Canary Islanders' favourite festival - and the Carnival El Mar is its most popular, taking place usually three days prior to Ash Wednesday.

In reality, the islanders require little excuse for a party, and each town hosts its own annual fiesta. Most notable are those of San Sebastian, which is held in January, and includes street theatre, music and dancing, and culminates in a procession to the local shrine. Other worthy diary-dates include the fiesta of Guadalupe - the Patron Saint of Fishermen - in mid-July; that of Santiago, in late July; and El Paso, in September. (This latter - the largest of Gomera's fiestas - attracts 100s of revellers from the nearby islands.)

Culinary choice
The island's cuisine - like its music - shares much with the Spanish Caribbean. The local wine is most distinctive, complementing a tapa (snack) of watercress soup, goat's cheese, fresh fish and roast pork or goat meat. The 'papas arrugadas' (salty skinned potatoes) that accompany most meals are quite delicious. As are the 'mojo' and 'almogrote', two piquant sauces that enrich the hunks of fresh bread that arrive, unsolicited, at your restaurant table, the moment you sit.

Those with a sweeter tooth will appreciate the Canarian specialty of 'guarapo' (sap of the Canarian palm tree) - the perfect addition to fruit salads, and other desserts - as well as the many lard cakes, buns, pastries, biscuits and roasted milk that are mainstays of Gomeran confection.

Those who prefer to cook will be pleased to learn that Santiago's supermarkets are well-stocked and realistically priced.

In addition, the village's many caf? bars and restaurants, several of which are situated next to the small, picturesque port, offer a choice of anglicised, and more local, fare - enabling you to select from a light snack or a multi-course tapas meal. (Be warned: many Gomerans think of the latter, as the former.)

For a special treat, you may also wish to enjoy one of the five restaurants at the luxurious Tecina Hotel and Golf Complex, which is owned and managed by the island's 'first family'.

That family, the Olsens, is inextricably linked with Gomeran history, dating back more than a century. No one knows what prompted Norwegian Thomas Olsen, and later, his son Fred (father of the company's current President) to begin buying land in the area, in 1904. One assumes that he simply fell in love - with the island, and its inhabitants.

Despite turning a considerable profit - by securing control of the island's freshwater springs, and purchasing huge tracts of land at rock-bottom rates - the Olsens brought (and indeed, continue to bring) if not wealth, then at least prosperity, to the island: in those early days by, amongst other good works, establishing a functional irrigation system and opening the island's first school. And, more recently, as Gomera's biggest employer.

Today, the island survives and thrives almost entirely on tourism. Which is hardly surprising. For, in stark counterpoint to the more exotic pursuits mentioned earlier, it's a place where you can also enjoy the familiar comforts of home - not least: BBC TV and Radio 4; water direct from the tap; and a high standard of accommodation.

You don't even have to adjust your watch when you arrive.

In fact, tucked away in your exceptionally well-appointed apartment, there'd be little to remind you that you're actually holidaying on an extinct volcano.

Save, of course, for that sublime climate.

Most Las Vegas first-run entertainment is sold out well in advance, but there may be single seats available. If the party is willing to be seated separately, this may result in excellent seats at a good price. However, ticket outlets (Near Planet Hollywood and The Wynn) sell half-price and discount tickets for that day's productions, including less expensive afternoon shows. (Beware that online or "discount" agents can charge more than the face value of the ticket.)

Las Vegas also offers free entertainment. Treasure Island's "Sirens" production holds multiple shows daily and the fountains at Bellagio display dancing waters and lovely music every 15-30 minutes. Bellagio's Conservatory, MGM's Lion Habitat, the Tiger Exhibit and the Erupting Volcano at the Mirage are also free. Free performances at Caesar's, Circus Circus and Excalibur are especially entertaining for children, and allow guests to relax in air-conditioned comfort for an hour or so.

Other attractions carry a price tag that may not be the best use of some travelers' resources. The Venetian Gondola rides, Paris's Eiffel Tower, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef, and the amusement park rides atop the Stratosphere can take a big bite out of a wallet-even with coupons. It's just as much fun to walk through the Caesar's Forum Shops, snap pictures inside the Luxor pyramid, relax near the Wynn Waterfall, or simply browse the European markets of Paris and the Venetian.

Casinos will track individual gaming and reward it with "comps" on future hotel stays and meals. Ask casino representatives before gaming to be given full credit. It is also a good idea to take only take a portion of one's gambling budget on each trip to a casino, and quit when it has been depleted, regardless of winnings. 2007 Surprise For Malta Holiday Industry

A recent announcement by a major UK tour operator that it is to expand its operations in Malta as a response to increased demand has caught some in the island's holiday and hotel industry by surprise.

The news from MyTravel comes after an agreement with Air Malta to increase flight capacity to the island for its customers. The MyTravel Group, one of the best known and popular UK holiday companies, includes Airtours and Direct Holidays.

The Malta Tourist Authority have greeted the news by saying that the holiday company are increasingly aware of Malta as a holiday destination and that visitor numbers would be increasing in 2007.

Malta travel guide YourMalta.com were as surprised as anyone that MyTravel were increasing capacity for Malta.

'2006 has not been a good year for the Malta tourist industry', they say. 'Overall figures could show a drop of around 100,000 visitors in 2006 compared to 2005. There hasn't been much optimism lately that 2007 will be a lot better for the island, but there are new low cost flights which could help stabilise the number of holidaymakers next year, and with Air Malta doing good promotions and starting a new route from Liverpool perhaps next year will see a long awaited turnaround in the island's fortunes. MyTravel are a good well respected company and if they think Malta is going to be in demand perhaps there is real hope'.

Good news for Malta also came from a report by US travel writer Laura McKenzie, who ranked Malta as one of the top five destinations in the world for tourists in the world.

Hotel and resort owners had watched the Maltese government earlier this year drag the negotiations out with the low cost airlines for some time, with delays in agreements losing Malta the potential of having extra tourists for this past summer season. And with a report showing that Malta could be an expensive location for 2007 holidays compared to the Spanish islands, the news from MyTravel is helping to instil a sense of optimism for the 2007 season.

'There is a possibility', comment YourMalta, 'That the introduction of the low cost airlines flying to Malta will merely delay the long term decline of the island's tourist industry. Unless money is spent on the infrastructure and improving the environment for the tourists generally there is a danger that a lot of visitors will be one-off. If there's a lesson to be learned in Malta that the government and her agencies have failed to grasp it is that sustainable tourism is built on repeat visitors. At the moment a lot of visitors from the UK see Malta as a one-off trip'.

As well as Ryanair, it was hoped that easyjet would also start services to Malta, but the latest reports are that talks have failed to produce an agreement. Brighter news has come from the island's flag carrier, Air Malta though.

As well as at one stage selling two tickets a minute in a recent promotion the airline is starting a new service from Liverpool next year.

The property market will also be keeping a close eye on tourist numbers now that the new flights have been given the green light. If visitor numbers do drop in the medium term it could be good news for locals looking to buy their first property.

There has been some discontent on the island about the rising prices of property in Malta, and with less overseas buyers the possibility of prices falling and more islanders being able to get on the property ladder could be welcome news, as today's tourist is often tomorrow's property buyer.

But now that low cost airlines are going to start offering flights to Malta, this could help the Malta hotels and holiday market as more people consider three and four day breaks instead of the traditional week or fortnight, boosting the overall number of visitors, especially if Air Malta and the low cost airlines bring the cost of Malta flights to levels seen for the Spanish islands.

Malta has traditionally seen the majority of her visitors from the UK, but this could be changing to a more diverse mix in future years.

Last year saw a record number of visitors from Italy, and increased enquiries have been received at estate agents across the island from Scandanvia, Holland, France and Belgium, helping to increase the demand for Malta properties.

Joanne was excited about this long awaited vacation. It had been two years since she sauntered the streets of Puerto Rico. Tanning, beach BBQs, cocktail parties, dancing the nights away were all things of the past.
